Learning by doing – Using recycled PVC to tile up your walls

Trial and error combined with heat, perspiration and a good pinch of inspiration: this is how Anne-Sophie Bourgogne developed her floor and wall coverings in Spain using recycled PVC from Italy’s Vinyloop.

“Creativity is a process of experimentation, observation, exchange, and I’d say even sometimes accidents and surprises. The inspiration in this case was drawn from understanding the material and its reaction to different conditions.” Heat was the revealing factor for this R-PVC project,

Using heat, it was possible to create a surface made of 100 percent PVC and even blend it with other materials to increase its value. From that phenomenon, the researcher was able to experiment and expand the surfaces being created.

“Without it being a problem, we had to adapt to different conditions: the size, homogeneity and the choice of materials. After having burned a few samples, we evaluated the criteria that allowed us to create the surface we needed, and chose the materials that worked with one another,” explains Anne-Sophie

“One of my objectives, and a key issue at stake, was to use recycled PVC either from Vinyloop as a basis, or other applications with a PVC surface.  So I had to rummage and find other discarded or second-hand PVC materials.”

“One of the difficulties was the size of the surface to create because we were not able to make one single surface by the metre. From that difficulty a great idea was born, which was to create slabs, like tiles, and to play with them to create unique versions that one could not imagine in a complete surface.’’

Imagining the big picture in more ways than one: aesthetics and comfort for your home, sustainability for the planet.
