The overall aim of the research project “Technology and Application Development for Welding Wood-Plastic Composites based on PVC” lies in in the analysis of the weldability of commercially available WPC formulations using heated tool butt welding, ultrasonic welding and vibration welding. The objective is to adapt the findings made so far of on current WPC welding processes and parameters in such a way that this new material can be joined using these welding techniques. The main focus of the research is on the optimization of the heated tool butt welding parameters and the determination of the basic weldability of WPC using ultrasonic and vibration welding.

Category:InnovationThe motivation behind this research project was based on the long overdue adjustment of the process parameters in heated tool butt welding to the current PVC formulations and welding machines for window profiles. The expected potential in terms of cycle time reduction could be clearly confirmed and successfully implemented. Each of the considered white profile types allowed a reduction of the cycle time by about 24%, along with increasing the weld strength by an average of 17%. Profiles with outstanding weldability could even be welded up to 40% faster, while the weld quality according to valid quality guidelines would always be ensured. Thanks to the developed welding parameters, the efficiency of a window manufacturing line could be clearly increased and costs could be reduced without having to face quality losses, a higher environmental impact or additional investment costs.

Category:InnovationA window frame made of PVC is for example expected to have a durability of more than 50 years. Therefore the quality of the window profiles is checked regularly in line with the quality assurance at the production. The determination of the mechanical properties have been correlated with the DMA measurements of the loss-factor, helping the manufacturers for a better understanding and adjustment of production parameters or receipes.

Category:InnovationOn the international window market the welding of PVC profiles plays a dominant role since years. The time of the welding process can be reduced by carefully analysing all parameters, including the receipe, the rheology of the PVC, the settings of the welding machine. This leads to time savings and optimised properties of the windows.

Category:InnovationThe superior aim consists in the optimization of the device properties and welding conditions for the welding of extruded rigid PVC in construction. It is a fact that for extrusion welding, the screw configuration as well as the temperature and pressure are key parameters. The work has helped understanding the major influences of these parameters, and lead may be to a further development on the market of this technique.
